Sights of Thassos, Archaeological Sites, Museums

Thassos is a literally blessed place, as in every corner one can discover small and big treasures. From its enchanting beaches its green picturesque villages the waterfalls and the artificial lake of Maries to the mines and the palace in Limenaria the scenery leaves no visitor dissatisfied.

It is characteristic that on the island one can find several archaeological sites, such as the Acropolis of Thassos, the ancient theatre, the ancient market. Over the years, the Kalogeriko has become a trademark of the capital of the island and a real jewel for the island. These monuments demonstrate the rich history and cultural origins of Thassos. A visit to the archaeological museum Thassos, which is housed in Limenas and has been recently renovated, is indispensable and very informative regarding the presence of the first and later inhabitants who settled on the island as well as the findings that have survived until today.

From a religious point of view, it is worth mentioning the holy monastery of Michael Archangely in the area of Aliki. Undoubtedly, a visit to this monastery creates feelings of peace and tranquility. It is located at the point where the uninterrupted blue of the sea joins the endless blue of the sky and the view that one sees unfolding in front of him is unique. Finally, the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is located in the traditional mountain village Panagia. It is a gathering point for many visitors, especially during the 15th of August, as Panagia is celebrated and a festival is held in her honour.
